Risible rumour of the day: Raul to Manchester United

Raul - Photo Darz Mol CCAIt appears that the World Cup is a good place to bury bad rumours. And to fill the column inches with inane ‘if x happens and y happens then z will happen assuming a-w has already happened which it probably won’t have’ speculation, enter Simon Jones at the Daily Mail:

Manchester United wait in wings as Real Madrid ponder Raul release

Manchester United to sign Raul? Well, only if Real Madrid are going to release him - and they’re only ‘pondering’ that.
Manchester United have been linked with a move for Real Madrid striker Raul should he be allowed to leave on a free transfer.
Yes - by you. Now. Less than three months ago, of course, the paper was talking about him joining Liverpool.
Real president Florentino Perez is believed to be ready to give the 32-year-old a golden handshake to leave the club this summer.
“Is believed” - perhaps the most reliable words in any transfer news.
However, while he is admired by Sir Alex Ferguson, sources at Old Trafford believe Raul is too old to make a significant impact on the Premier League.
So, no, Manchester United probably aren’t waiting in the wings then. And on that bombshell, the Daily Mail’s story ends quite abruptly. But not a moment too soon.
